Basic Treatments for TMJ Disorders / TMD - Wilmington, Spring

There are numerous treatments available for TMJ disorders, which allows for patients to get the treatment they really need.  We want to ensure that the TMJ disorder patients who visit our Wilmington practice have the root cause of their problem addressed. In some cases, the basic therapies covered below will be all that is required. In other cases, however, patients may need advanced treatment for TMJ disorders to really alleviate the condition. During your consultation with Dr. Raj Kulkarni, we will go over all of your treatment options in greater detail.

Mouth Guards / Night Guards / Bite Splints

If teeth grinding (bruxism) is identified as the main cause of your TMJ disorder, then the use of a night guard is likely. A night guard is a custom-made mouthpiece that is to be worn when a patient sleeps. This night guard will reduce the contact between the upper and lower rows of teeth, reducing the amount of stress placed on the jaw muscles and joint.

Braces/Invisalign®/Orthodontic Care

One of the primary causes of bruxism is tooth misalignment. That’s why some TMJ disorder patients at our Wilmington practice will undergo orthodontic treatment of some kind. Patients may get braces, Invisalign®, or even different kinds of headgear to improve the alignment of the teeth or even the position of the jaw.

Dental Restorations

Tooth damage can occur as a result of bruxism. Sometimes this means small chips or cracks of the teeth which can be more than a cosmetic problem. In order to address this, dental crowns, dental bonding, inlays, onlays, porcelain veneers, and other options will be considered. We will work to restore your dental health and enhance the appearance of your smile.

Relaxation Techniques

If stress is causing you to grind your teeth, you may want to consider various techniques for relaxing and relieving this tension. This could mean anything from medication to certain kinds of stress-relieving exercise.
